The 2023 Smart Surfaces Seminar was held

On August 8-9, the Smart Surfaces 2023 conference took place in Shenzhen. The event was mainly organized by the Center of Double Helix (CDH) of the Shenzhen International Graduate School of Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SIGS) and the Superlubricity R&D Centre of the Shenzhen Tsinghua University Research Institute. The School of Aerospace Engineering of Tsinghua University also co-organized the conference.

The main focus of the conference was on the research, manufacturing, and industrial application of smart surface materials. It aimed to provide a platform for academic exchange and collaboration among leading experts in the field. The conference specifically addressed topics related to smart surfaces, Extreme hydrophobicity materials, and other relevant fields.

During the meeting, fifteen experts and scholars from various institutions participated in discussions and exchanges on material research, major applications, and potential cooperation in several fields. The participating institutions included

Tsinghua SIGS, Tsinghua University,Harbin Institute of Technology, University of Electronic Science and Technology, South China University of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, China Aerodynamic Research and Development Center, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Thermal Control Technology Laboratory of the Fifth Aerospace Academy, the Tenth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, China Building Materials Glass Research Institute Group Co., LTD, Midea Group, Huawei Scientist Committee Office, Huawei Chaspark, and Huawei Central Research Institute.

The discussions and exchanges focused on various areas, including Aerospace, aviation, Marine, bionics and biomedicine, and energy and environment. Experts and scholars shared their research findings, explored potential applications, and discussed opportunities for collaboration in these fields. The meeting provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and fostering partnerships among experts from different institutions.

The seminar commenced with opening speeches delivered by Professor Ma LAN, Vice President of Tsinghua SIGS, and Zheng Shuquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor at Tsinghua SIGS Materials Research Institute, founder of Center of Double Helix.

During her speech, Professor Ma highlighted the leadership of Academician Zheng’s team in the global research of materials with special surface properties, such as structural superlubricity and extreme hydrophobicity. She emphasized that their research has significantly contributed to the advancement of relevant industrial technologies and applications. Professor Ma expressed her hope that the participants would engage in thorough discussions and exchanges during the forum, exploring opportunities for collaboration. She emphasized the importance of jointly promoting the transformation and implementation of both basic and applied scientific research achievements.

In his speech, Academician Zheng emphasized the significance of smart surfaces in driving advancements across various fields. He highlighted that this technology holds great potential for the future and that the industrial cluster in Shenzhen provides a rich environment for its development. Academician Zheng emphasized the historic opportunities that lie ahead and encouraged participants to embrace challenges and foster innovation.

Academician Zheng stressed the importance of not only exchanging ideas but also establishing collaborations and implementing projects to propel the development of the field. He specifically encouraged young scholars to generate groundbreaking innovations that can have a transformative impact on the world. Academician Zheng urged participants to seize opportunities, embrace challenges, maintain an open and cooperative mindset, and work together to drive scientific and technological revolution.

During the seminar held on the 8th, the session was chaired by Lv Cunjing, an associate professor from Tsinghua University, and Wang Xiaoxiong, an assistant professor from SIGS of Tsinghua University. Several distinguished speakers made special presentations during the seminar:

Each of these speakers provided special insights and shared their expertise during the seminar.

During the seminar held on the 9th, Associate Professor Yuan Zhiping from the Beijing Institute of Technology served as the moderator. The following experts and scholars delivered thematic presentations:

These experts and scholars shared their research ideas and insights related to intelligent surfaces. They also expressed their vision for cross-cooperation, highlighting the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches in advancing the field of smart surfaces.

During the two-day seminar, experts and scholars engaged in extensive discussions on various scientific issues, technical challenges, research achievements, and application prospects in the field of intelligent surfaces, with a particular focus on extremely hydrophobic surfaces. These discussions were conducted from a multidisciplinary perspective, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of scientific principles, practical applications, and future cooperation oapportunities in this field.

Tsinghua SIGS and the Superlubricity R&D Centre of the Shenzhen Tsinghua University Research Institute are dedicated to addressing the major needs of the country. They aim to strengthen deep collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions, fostering a trinity ecosystem of 'education, science and technology, talent.' Through this collaborative effort, they seek to promote frontier scientific exchanges, address key issues in the field of science, and accelerate the process of scientific research commercialization and industrialization.
